Spoilers after the jump.
So now we have the answer to my biggest question, sort of.
If these six Losties are candidates, why doesn’t Locke/The Man in Black just kill them?
The answer - because he needs them to get off the island.
Why does he need them? I don’t know. He also tells Claire that Kate is not a candidate. So what’s the count there? The Candidates are Jack, Hurley, Sawyer, Sayid, Jin (or Sun) and who else? Am I missing someone?
Speaking of Claire, I HATE the way her character has been treated. Her character has never been overly three-dimensional, but up until the last couple of seasons, she was back-story worthy. Her relationship with Jack has got to be resolved. I feel its too large of a story to be swept under the rug by what I foresee as Claire’s eventual demise. Making her and Sayid evil has made me reluctantly turn my back on characters I once liked but now I see no hope for their redemption.
The only story to pull for here is Sun and Jin. They need to be together and they need to get home to their little girl. With the exceptions of Desmond and Claire, everyone else on the island really has nothing waiting for them at home. The series seems to be moving toward major reveals and plot tie-ups, which is fine, but I’m not really concerned with anyone getting off the island except Sun and Jin.
Oh, and Desmond. Man, he’s really had it tough. He also has someone waiting for him off the island - his wife Penny and their son, Charlie. I think Whitmore has brought him to the island as his ace in the hole. Desmond’s character is about one thing — time travel. I believe his appearance is the catalyst for the flash-sideways segments.
I also believe the two timelines are going to merge. I’ve noticed that the sideways lives of the candidates (taking place off the island) are better in most ways. The problems they have there are problems that they have dealt with by going to the island. During the flash-forward season, Kate dealt with her criminal past. Sawyer dealt with the con man that haunted him. Sun dealt with her father. I believe once the timelines merge, even those that have died, unless dead in both timelines (like Kimme and Mikhail), will ultimately live.
Of course, next week’s episode could shoot this theory in the foot. That’s the great thing about Lost.
